Essay: equal opportunities

The problem of equal opportunities, which is closely related to social justice, has never been solved so far. Although democratic systems have spread across new countries, the only occasion for public debate about the matter is when people go to polls.
Politicians seem to forget about their electorate after seizing power. There is a lot of evidence that people are not equal before the law. A poor man can be imprisoned for shoplifting but a big fish can steal millions and they let him off without any serious consequences.
The state does not encourage people to open businesses. On one hand complicated and unclear regulations together with strict control discourage many honest and hardworking citizens from running businesses. On the other hand we have examples of corruption and deception never being punished.
Parents fall into despair when they cannot afford to educate their kids. Their adult children will never be able to find good jobs for the sake of their poverty. But even if they manage to graduate from a university they might find it extremely difficult to find suitable positions for themselves. They come to conclusion that political or personal relations are more important than professional qualifications. In Poland, for example, some positions are strictly limited for outsiders. They include lawyers, notaries, bailiffs, etc. These jobs seem to be hereditary. The old, rotten staff do not need competition from outside. This results in poor quality service and make it possible for them to live beyond their means.
These examples of social injustice illustrate the need of change in the law system. The political leaders ought to forget about their rewards and benefits. They should remember that the strength of their country depends on the strength of their citizens. Equal chances for people is the basic condition of development. They can contribute a lot to their homeland. People are looking forward to deeds not words and politicians should remember about their morals.
Only few people have power of authority and they can make use of it. Young democracies have a lot to improve and their politicians have a lot to learn.
